Akin was born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan to Nigerian immigrant parents. He attended the University of Michigan where he obtained a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Cell and Molecular Biology. He then went on to obtain a Doctor of Medicine degree at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgery and Congress of Neurological Surgery.
His interest in neurosurgery include cerebrovascular, endovascular surgery, skull base, spinal surgery, and neurocritical care.
In his spare time, Akin enjoys playing basketball, tennis, golf, learning guitar, and spending time with his family and friends.
